Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using these medications should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
