Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to question particular calls from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
